Lungfishes are thought to have first appeared in Devonian period ( about 410 million to 360 million years ago ), and declined at the biginning of Triassic period. Lungfishes are considered as a bridging creature which moved onto the land from water. The finding that there is a similarlity of DNA between Lungfish and the amphibia has lately attracted. There are some different Lungfish family members including Neoceratodus ( one genus, one species ), Protopterus ( four species, seven subspecies), and Lepidosiren ( one species). Protopterus and Lepidosiren in particular have developed lung function. Young Lung fish have external gills similar to the ones of the amphibias. Those which live in an enviroment that has a dry seasons dig holes in riverbeds when the river dries up.
